Assuring Education Quality in the New Era

Micro-credentials: what makes one worth a learner’s time

Short credentials are opening new paths to work. Four signals of quality learners and employers can look for.

Professional training session in a classroom

Micro-credentials, digital badges and short skills programs are opening new pathways to careers. For a learner choosing between them, and an employer reading them on a résumé, the question is the same: what does this credential actually say?

1. Clear competencies

A credible credential states what the holder can do, in terms an employer recognises, not only the topics covered.

2. Real assessment

Attendance is not achievement. Look for assessed tasks that require learners to demonstrate the competency.

3. Qualified instruction

Instructors should bring relevant expertise and keep it current, and the provider should be able to show how.

4. Independent validation

Third-party review distinguishes providers committed to learner success from the rest of a crowded market. It is the signal CEQAC accreditation is designed to give.

None of these require a long program. They require a program designed, delivered and assessed with care, which is what competency-based quality assurance looks for.
